What Is a Tire Rotation?

Tire Rotation Your tires see a lot of wear and tear over the course of their life. As you use them, their tread will begin to wear down. However, your tires don’t wear evenly. Instead, the uneven weight of the car and what side of the road you drive on will affect how your tires wear down.

In most cars, the engine and transmission are built on the front of the vehicle with a front-wheel drive system. It means that a lot more weight is placed on the front of the car as opposed to the rear. To ensure that your front wheels don’t experience more wear than your rear ones, it’s important to have your tires rotated.

Signs You Need a Tire Rotation

In general, a tire rotation is more of a habit you should get into, and so maintaining a steady schedule of periodically rotating your tires is key. That being said, there are signs of tire wear that you should look out for to determine when you should rotate your tires.

You should rotate your tires as soon as possible if you notice:

  • Unevenly worn-out treads on one side of the car
  • A feeling of reduced traction
  • Vehicle vibration at higher speeds

It’s important to note that when looking out for uneven tire wear, it doesn’t just mean wear on the front or back tires. Pay attention to the right and left sides of the vehicle, as well. If you notice more wear on one tire than any of the others, that’s also a sign you need a tire rotation.

When Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Tire ServiceIt’s important to remain consistent with tire rotations to ensure that your tires last as long as possible.

That’s why it’s generally a good idea to get tire rotations every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. In order to help keep up with your tire rotations as much as possible, it’s a good practice to rotate them every time you have an oil change done.

To ensure that your tires are getting the proper rotations, though, you want to make sure you’re using the right tire rotation pattern. For front-wheel drive cars, you’re going to want to move the front tires to the rear while flipping the sides of the rear tires and moving them to the front.

For rear-wheel drive cars, it’s the opposite: Move the rear tires to the front while flipping the front tires and moving them to the back.

With four-wheel drive/all-wheel drive cars, you’ll want to flip both the front and rear tires while moving the front tires to the back and the back tires to the front.
