Transmission Fluid FAQ | Andy Mohr Nissan
If you’ve driven your car for a while, it may be time to take your vehicle in for some new transmission fluid. This liquid keeps your transmission running smoothly so you can accelerate quickly and maintain a well-functioning transmission for years.
To help Indianapolis, Lawrence, and Speedway drivers, we at Andy Mohr Nissan have compiled this helpful FAQ on transmission fluid and when to replace it.
Call NowWhat Color is Transmission Fluid?
Fresh transmission fluid will appear as a red, almost crimson, translucent liquid. Over time this color will darken as the fluid ages; in fact, this is the primary method a person would take in determining when to replace their fluid.
If your fluid is aged but still fine, it will be darker than fresh fluid but still quite red. When the fluid turns to a deep, dark red, that’s when you’re going to want to replace your fluid. It’s also important to be weary of the possibility of burnt transmission fluid, which will appear black. If your transmission fluid is burnt, be sure to have your transmission system checked out.
How Often Should I Change Transmission Fluid?
The question of when to change your transmission fluid really comes down to how hard you drive. Generally speaking, though, for an automatic transmission it’s recommended that you change your transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
Again though, this really depends on your driving style and where you’re driving. To be careful, it can be a good idea to check your transmission fluid periodically, maybe after an oil check, to ensure you notice a need for transmission fluid early.
Signs of Bad Transmission Fluid
Apart from your transmission fluid simply becoming a dark color, there are several signs that you can be aware of while you drive. Probably the most notable among these is any strange noises that seem to come from underneath your car. These may sound like a grinding noise from the gears not receiving proper lubrication.
You may also experience problems with shifting gears; maybe your automatic transmission hangs on a gear for a little too long. There is also the possibility to feel your car surging forward randomly as you drive. If you experience any of these problems, be sure to have your transmission checked out as soon as possible.
What Are the Types of Transmission Fluid?
Some vehicles use different transmission fluids depending on the type of transmission being used. Probably the most standard type of transmission fluid you’ll encounter though is Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Transmission Fluid. This is an all-purpose transmission fluid that is becoming more common in today’s cars.
If your vehicle uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), you’re going to want to use CVT fluid. Due to the unique design of these transmissions, CVT fluid must be used with these vehicles to ensure quality performance.
In order to make sure you’re always using the right transmission fluid for your car, you’ll want to confirm inside your user manual. Some cars use transmission fluids that are unique to their brand, so you’ll want to stick to whatever your manufacturer recommends.
